Detailed itinerary
Day 01: Arrive Paro – Thimphu
Arrive at Paro on a spectacular Himalayan flight. Meet our representative at the airport and transfer to Thimphu via the scenic Pachu River. In Paro, visit Ta Dzong Museum (National Museum) and Rimpong Dzong to see paintings of Milarepa, Bhutan’s revered meditation master. Orientation on Bhutanese etiquette before dinner. Overnight in Thimphu.
Day 02: Thimphu Sightseeing
Explore Thimphu’s cultural highlights: National Memorial Chorten, Changangkha Temple, and Zilukha Nunnery. Optional visits include the Takin Preserve and Tashichhodzong, the impressive fortress housing ministries and the central monk body. Overnight in Thimphu.
Day 03: Thimphu – Punakha
Drive over Dochu-La Pass (3,100m), with panoramic Himalayan views, to the Punakha Valley. Visit the historic Punakha Dzong, the winter headquarters of the Je Khenpo, with stunning architecture and gold-embossed pillars. Overnight in Punakha/Wangduephodrang.
Day 04: Punakha Exploration
Hike through ricefields to Khamsum Yueley Namgyal Chorten, perched on a hill overlooking the river. Enjoy a picnic lunch, then visit Chimi Lhakhang, the Temple of Fertility. Overnight in Punakha/Wangduephodrang.
Day 05: Punakha – Trongsa
Drive through Wangduephodrang, then over Pele La Pass (3,420m). Visit Chendebji Chorten, built in the 18th century. Approach the majestic Trongsa Dzong, perched on a deep canyon. Overnight in Trongsa.
Day 06: Trongsa – Bumthang
Visit Trongsa Dzong and Ta Dzong Museum before driving to Bumthang, the spiritual heartland of Bhutan. Stop at Chummey Valley before arriving in Jakar. Visit Kurjey Lhakhang and Jambay Lhakhang, some of Bhutan’s oldest sacred sites. Overnight in Jakar, Bumthang.
Day 07: Bumthang – Ura Valley & Festival
Excursion to Ura Valley to witness masked dances and cultural festivities of the Ura Festival. Interact with locals dressed in traditional attire and enjoy music, dancing, and blessings. Overnight in Bumthang.
Day 08: Bumthang – Tang Valley
Visit Tang Valley, the most remote valley in Bumthang. Explore Ugyen Chholing Palace, the 14th-century Tang Rimochen Lhakhang, and Mebar Tsho (Burning Lake), where Guru Rinpoche’s treasures were discovered. Overnight in Bumthang.
Day 09: Bumthang – Punakha
Morning visit to Tamshing Lhakhang, famed for its ancient Buddhist wall paintings. Drive to Punakha with lunch en route. Overnight in Punakha.
Day 10: Punakha – Thimphu – Paro
Hike to Khamsum Yueley Namgyal Chorten in Yabesa village, then visit Wangduephodrang Dzong. Drive back to Thimphu for shopping at handicraft stores, then continue to Paro. Overnight in Paro.
Day 11: Paro – Taktsang & Drukgyel Dzong
Hike to Taktsang Monastery (Tiger’s Nest), perched 900 meters above the valley. In the afternoon, visit the reconstructed Drukgyel Dzong, with Mount Jomolhari as a stunning backdrop, and explore other Paro valley sights. Overnight in Paro.
Day 12: Departure from Paro
After breakfast, transfer to Paro Airport for your onward journey. Tashi Delek!
